چکیده

DEFINITION A valid-time index is a temporal index that enables fast access to valid-time datasets. In a traditional database, an index is used for selection queries. When accessing valid-time databases such selections also involve the valid-time dimension (the time when a fact becomes valid in reality). The characteristics of the valid-time dimension imply various properties that the temporal index should have in order to be efficient. As traditional indices, the performance of a temporal index is described by three costs: (i) storage cost (i.e., the number of pages the index occupies on the disk), (ii) update cost (the number of pages accessed to perform an update on the index; for example when adding, deleting or updating a record), and (iii) query cost (the number of pages accessed for the index to answer a query).

Indexing Valid Time Intervals

To support temporal operators and to increase the efficiency of temporal queries, indexing based on temporal attributes is required. We consider the problem of indexing the temporal dimension in valid time databases. We assume that the temporal information of data objects are represented as valid time intervals that have to be managed dynamically by an efficient index structure. Unlike the time...

A Proposal for Indexing Bitemporal Databases via Cooperative B+-trees

In this paper we propose an indexing structure for bitemporal databases. Such structure is based on two trees, one indexing valid time and another indexing transaction time. The trees share pointers to the actual data records, which are thus not duplicated. Bitemporal queries are processed by dividing the query in two parts, a valid time part and a transaction time part. Each tree is searched a...

Index Structures for Temporal and Multimedia Databases

by TOLGA BOZKAYA This thesis proposes index structures for efficient evaluation of temporal queries in temporal databases and similarity based queries in multimedia databases. To support temporal operators and to increase the efficiency of temporal queries, indexing based on temporal attributes is required. A temporal database can support two notions of time. Valid time is the time when a data ...

R-Tree Based Indexing of Now-Relative Bitemporal Data

The databases of a wide range of applications, e.g., in data warehousing, store multiple states of time-evolving data. These databases contain a substantial part of now-relative data: data that became valid at some past time and remains valid until the current time. More specifically, two temporal aspects of data are frequently of interest, namely valid time, when data is true, and transaction ...

R-Tree Based Indexing of General Spatio-Temporal Data

Real-world objects are inherently spatially and temporally referenced, and many database applications rely on databases that record the past, present, and anticipated future locations of, e.g., people or land parcels. As a result, indices that efficiently support queries on the spatio-temporal extents of objects are needed. In contrast, past indexing research has progressed in largely separate ...
